I must be getting a bit numb in my old age. I've spent weeks wondering where they got the name fromand then today I said it out loud. So now the question is "Can someone not spell coup de grace or is it a deliberate phonetic spelling, or just a coincidence that that is what it sounds like?"

Also doesn't coup de grace actually mean the final blow that eventually kills the adversary, in which case it is an odd name for a sporting event

[Genuine question]

yes, it's a deliberate phonetic spelling.

And yes, it refers to the final blow...
